Zahid Hamidi Discharge: The Rakyat Deserves Clarification
Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia (IKRAM) opines that the rakyat is deserving of a clear and comprehensive explanation from the Attorney-General’s Chambers over the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s verdict of discharge not amounting to acquittal in the case of 47 charges of bribery, breach of trust and money laundering of Yayasan Akalbudi’s funds by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
IKRAM has scrutinised the 11 arguments given by the prosecution over the application and believes that further elaboration is imperative. The rationale given that a detailed and in-depth investigation must first be undertaken is baffling and raises many questions in light of the establishment of prima facie in the Kuala Lumpur High Court on 24 January 2022. The matter would be decidedly different if prima facie had not yet been established.
IKRAM is concerned over the possibility of political motivation behind withdrawal of all the charges, which would concurrently erode the rakyat’s trust in the integrity and commitment of the unity government in eradicating corruption.
IKRAM highlights the firm reprimand by presiding judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah that a full acquittal would be a waste of public funds and of the court’s time, especially when 99 witnesses have been brought forth to testify by the prosecution and 15 by the defence.
IKRAM subsequently urges the unity government to continue its reformation agenda by segregating the Attorney-General’s Chambers from the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO), placing both the PPO and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission under the purview of the Parliament to relieve them of Executive influence and to draft the Political Funding Act with immediacy to preclude future conflicts of interest.
